Spotlight Match

All eyes will be on the 119 pound title match of the Berks County wrestling tournament (BCIAA), as two defending champions square off.

Nate Giorgio (SV), a two time Berks County champion is the top seed against third seeded Austin Haas (Fle), who won a title last year at 112.

Disappointing Day

As the wrestlers start to prepare for the parade of champions, it's obvious that the 140 lbs. weight class as been decided as finalist Sam Nieves of Reading is currently wearing a cast on his right hand.

Nieves will have to forfeit for injury, which gives Mark Maloney of Brandywine Heights the title.

Nieves has a small bone fracture, which he suffered in the semifinals and the medical staff won't clear him for the finals. The Reading senior, who improved to 18-2 on the year with a win over
Jennsy Santana (Muh), says he hurt his hand in the first period, but was able to gut out an 18-8 major decision.

Championship Nuggets

* 11 of the 14 #1 seeds are into the finals, those ousted in the semis are Alec Gracia of Fleetwood (103), Nate Soto of Daniel Boone (125), and Julio Arredondo of Wyomissing (171). Gracia and Arredondo will compete in the consolation 3rd place finals, and Soto will compete for fifth.

* Of the 11 #1 seeds in the championship finals, all of them will be facing the #2 seed.

* The featured underdog match kicks things off at 103. Jacob Werner (Wil) and Tanner White (SV) are ranked 5th and 6th respectively in the 103-pound weight class.

* Wilson leads the chase for the team title, Schuylkill Valley trailing by 18.5 points and Governor Mifflin by 39.5 points. Two of the finals matches are between Wilson and Schuylkill Valley wrestlers.

Vote Now!

With hundreds of wrestlers at the Geigle Complex this weekend, it's inevitable that there will be an unintentional oversight. Our apologies to returning champion Jordan Rosa (Wil), who's the top seed at 160 pounds, and accidentally omitted from our on-line poll for the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler.

Unfortunately because the poll is underway we can't change the selections. So from here on out if you want to vote for Rosa, select "other" and your vote will be counted!

Back in Action!

Wrestlers from the 16 Berks County schools competing in the BCIAA tournament are back at reading high school and warming up for today's action.

The semifinals get underway at 1 pm.

Top Seeds All Alive

After the first day of wrestling, it's obvious the seeding committee did a good job of setting up the brackets, as all 14 top seeds advanced to the semifinals. Nate Giorgio (SV) and Nick Hodgkins (Wyo), lead the way into Saturday's semis, as both try to become three time county champions.*

Giorgio and Hodgkins earned technical falls, Giorgio at 119 (bracket link) and Hodgkins at 145 (link), as both had an easy time in their only bouts of the night.

coaches watch another match

All but one of the #2 seeds are in the semis, the lone casualty was Zach Mitchell (DB) who lost to Bryan Muchoney (Wil) at 135 (link).

All 6 returning champions are still alive, as is a 2009 champion, Arty Walsh (SV), who won his title while wrestling for Wyomissing at 112, but is competing at 130 this year.

A handful of #3 and #4 seeds dropped into the losers bracket, but for the most part the brackets are holding form.

Wrestling resumes 1 pm Saturday with semifinal action and wrestle backs.

Returning Champions:*

112: Colin Ochs, Gov. Mifflin (103 last year)
119: Nate Giorgio, Schuylkill Valley (112 last year)
119: Austin Haas, Fleetwood
145: Nick Hodgkins, Wyomissing
152: Colin Martucci, Daniel Boone's (145 last year)
160: Jordan Rosa, Wilson (152 last year)

Quick Work

Late arriving fans, or those who blinked, may have missed some of the fastest pins in recent memory. Gerry Giorgio (Exe) and Cole Haldeman (Tul) made quick work of their opening round opponents as each recorded pins in 13 seconds.

The fast and furious action continued in the quarterfinals when Mile Weinhold (Tul) needed only 15 seconds to reach the semifinals.

One bystander noted that the county record was 9 seconds, but that has yet to be confirmed.

What is known, is that cub reporter Nolan Boyer, a sophomore at Schuylkill Valley, has been invaluable in our Berks wrestling coverage. Boyer's astute observation allowed him to compile all the championship bracket pins recorded in 30 seconds or less:

Fast Times at Reading High

Gerry Giorgio (Exe) def. Kyle Reidenhour (Kut) Fall 0:13
Cole Haldeman (Tul) def. Franklin Thomas (Wil) Fall 0:13

S.V. Split Decision

Schuylkill Valley comes in as the three-time defending team champions of the BCIAA Individual Tournament and are the favorites to make it four in a row.

Some of the early action has the Panthers splitting a pair of matches in the upper weights.

Michael Follweiler (KUT) pinned Troy Koch (SV) at 160, while at 171 Dustin Davis (SV) defeats Ian Gardocki (TV).
